Thank You Race Committee!

Bold LancerWe’d just like to say a great big thank you to the entire Flushing Sailing Club Race Committee for the sterling work they are doing in running racing this week. If you think it’s been tough sailing in these big waves give a thought to the boys and girls who have been out there on the committee and mark boats madly rocking and rolling all day to look after us.

Our sport is entirely dependent on the wonderful volunteers that man our committee boats and put hundreds of hours in behind the scenes making events like these possible and we are extremely grateful to them all.

Cheers members and friends of Flushing Sailing Club!

Welcome To Sta-Lok Wednesday At The Henri Lloyd Half Ton Classic Cup

Good morning everyone and welcome to Sta-Lok Wednesday in Falmouth. Sadly the sun has deserted us today and its a little chillier so the Henri Lloyd Pop-Up shop has been doing a roaring trade selling extra clothing this morning.

At the briefing Race Officer Jack Penty advised that today’s plan is for two windward leeward races followed by an around the cans regatta course which will finish off the entrance to the Harbour.

The wind has gone round a little into the south east and is expected to moderate from its current mid teens down to circa or even sub ten knots later. Sadly it looks like the cloud cover is with us for the day and there’s even a possibility of some rain this afternoon, although hopefully this won’t arrive until after racing finishes.

Also at this morning’s briefing it was agreed with the competitors that the daily prize givings will be brought forward to 18.00 in the Regatta Marquee.

The Richard Of The Day Award

2016-08-17 08.40.58As regular followers of the Half Ton Fleet will know the sailors have a wry sense of humour and love nothing better than gently taking the Micky out of each other. This week we have a very special daily award, which for the purposes of this column will be know as The Richard Of The Day Award.  Each day the competitors are asked to nominate their favourite snafu of the day and a secret committee (OK – its actually regatta chair Dave Owens) selects the winner.

The awards are “sponsored” by Fat Willy’s Surf Shack and the winner is presented with a pair of stickers which must be displayed on the boat for the duration of the regatta and the orange Fat Willy’s T-shirt which must be proudly worn by the responsible crew member for the day.

2016-08-17 08.41.09At last night’s daily prize giving in the marquee the award for the first two days of the regatta were presented.  Day one’s Richard went to King One for their spectacular failure to check their lifeline lashings resulting in four of the crew getting an early bath just off the start line of race one.

And in an astonishing coincidence day two’s Richard also went to King One for their spectacular effort in firstly leaving their spinnaker ashore in the car when then set off from the dock, forcing them to come scurrying back in a panic to collect it, and then for blowing it out just after they hoisted it on the first run.

Henri Lloyd Half Ton Classics Cup – Day 2 Press Report

IMG_7783Day two of the Henri Lloyd Half Ton Classics
Cup, sponsored by day sponsor Mylor Yacht Harbour, saw the fleet taking part in a 40 mile Coastal Race, which carried a points weighting of 1.5. For the second day running the wind was from the east creating big swells and some exciting seat of the pants sailing.

Greg Peck’s Swuzzlebubble loves nothing better than a good windy beat and the race committee gave them just that with a 10 mile head banger first leg that tested everyone’s metal. Swuzzlebubble rounded the weather mark with a handsome lead, but on the run the wind dropped somewhat, compressing the fleet. Paul Pullen’s Miss Whiplash took full advantage of the situation gaining considerable ground. As the boats rounded the last mark Swuzzlebubble still had a big lead on the water, but on corrected time she and Miss Whiplash were now neck and neck. The final leg in through the heads was a close reach in an awkward swell and as Swuzzlebubble crossed the finish just off Falmouth all heads turned to see how Miss Whiplash was doing. The stopwatches were out and as Whiplash crossed the line it was confirmed that, after more than five hours racing, she had won by a mere six seconds. Third place went to Jonny Swan’s Harmony with Philippe Pilate’s General Tapioca fourth.

In the overall standings Miss Whiplash has pulled into a narrow 1.5 point lead over Swuzzlebubble while Harmony moves up into third, leapfrogging over General Tapioca with a half point advantage.
Whilst the majority enjoyed a good romp in lovely conditions, one boat that most definitely did not enjoy today was Robbie Tregear’s beautiful Per Elisa. On the spinnaker hoist their genoa sheet got caught in the spinnaker sheet, preventing them from releasing the sheet so that the boat broached out and laid flat. They picked themselves up and got going again but had to gybe to make Gull Rock. Robbie Tregear takes up the story; “During the gybe it’s all a matter of timing, and we were slightly out. We got our speed down the wave, but we hadn’t completed the gybe by the time we hit the bottom when the boat stopped but the kite carried on along with the rig, which crumpled into about five pieces.” Fortunately the crew were able to clear away the damaged rig and make their way home without outside assistance, but it brought their championship to an untimely end.

Back ashore the fleet were treated to beers on the dock by A2 Rigging followed by the daily prize giving in the Regatta Marquee which is located immediately opposite the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.

Tomorrow the fleet will return to inshore racing with races four and five of the series planned.  The forecast is for the wind to remain easterly and in the mid to high teens so there’s every expectation of starting on time at 10.30 for another great day’s sailing. The regatta continues until Friday 19 August.
